What are analytical instruments?
To give you a good idea of analytical devices, you should know what is meant by:
Analytical chemistry
Analytical chemistry is the part of chemistry that deals with the analysis of chemical compounds and mixtures. It deals with both the determination of the substances present and their concentration. This is called qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis respectively.
Analytical chemistry is interested in:
- The composition of mixtures: which substances are in them.
- The molecular structure of pure compounds: which atoms are bound together by what type of bond.
- The elemental analysis of pure compounds and mixtures: which elements they contain.
Analytical instruments
These are instruments which are used for qualitative analysis quantitative analysis. Some examples of analytical instruments are:
- GC Systems (Gas Chromatograph)
- HPLC systems (high pressure liquid chromatography)
- GC/MS Systems (Gas Chomatograph/Mass Spectrometry)
- AAS Systems (Atomic Absorption System)
- ICP-MS/OES Systems (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry/Mass Spectrometry and Optical Emission Spectrograph)
- LC/MS systems (liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry)
